Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen: 1970 Egg chair and ottoman
One of the most iconic chairs of the 20th century, and as recognisable as it is revered across the world of design.
Arne Jacobsen designed these chairs for the opening of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in 1958 - a sculptural contrast to the building's almost exclusively vertical and horizontal surfaces.
This particular chair was produced in November 1970, as testified by the sticker to the pedestal, and has spent the last 30 years tucked away and never used. It also has the Fritz Hansen stamp to the base and comes with the ottoman in matching fabric.
The fabric is in an overall good clean condition. The final photo shows where the fabric has come away from the foam in the central area, and thus the chair would benefit from being reupholstered in the future. It still has to be one of the comfiest chairs we have ever had the pleasure of owning. As with all original items of this era, this is sold as an upholstery project.
